
Doing the housewife thing was important, and is. And maybe now it's just time to go back to work, in light of our present lives, and because I now know what I was supposed to learn at home --- that motherhood is the most important role I will ever play. And once I finally surrendered to it and wiped all the stupid notions out of my head that our culture beats into us, I learned that it is also the most fulfilling and rewarding job on the planet.
Anybody who ever had a mom who made that role the #1 thing in her life already knew this. Or they should have. If a mom somehow taught that there was something more fulfilling out there, well, she must have not fully surrendered to motherhood. And if she taught that there was something more important, then I strongly suspect she later learned that she was wrong.
We have only a short time to instruct and nurture them. And I learned quite some time ago (and the hard way) that I couldn't do it effectively with too many irons in the fire. These years are important; after a certain age we can only hope to have already developed a relationship of such trust that they willingly allow our influence for the rest of their lives.
If you bungle raising your children, I don't think whatever else you do matters very much.

And more recently I learned that each moment is a blessing which can be taken away in the blink of an eye. We don't control how and when we are blessed, no matter how right we are doing things.
Do my lessons learned seem to contradict one another? Be a dedicated parent, but also know that your best is not what controls the end result. No, these statements are quite congruent if you understand that we are to do our best with priorities rightly aligned, but not for one moment get full of ourselves and think that our best is what guarantees good results.
