Lazy Days

Sunset Cruise

Derek and I went on a little cruise around Munising Bay (of Lake Superior) on Friday, the Summer Solstice. Our friend captains one of the local tour boats and several of us went out to enjoy the longest evening of the year.

I took this picture to illustrate something that flat-out amazed me while on the cruise. I knew that the depth dropped off quickly in many parts of Lake Superior. But I was flabbergasted to see that the depth of the water we were in when this photo was taken (I estimate we were about 30 yards from shore) was 88 feet! I have actually taken my kids to this exact beach and I remember Blake and Derek walking out a good ten feet, so I can't imagine how steep the incline must be, wherever it begins. Makes me nervous to think about the current there...

In case you are wondering what time the sun sets a couple of hours north of the 44th Parallel, these last two pics were taken just before 10pm, and shortly after 10pm, respectively. Civil twilight ends around 10:30.

Going to a Party

The Ride Home: Getting Screwed in the U.P.

On the way to Wisconsin, we noticed that fuel prices were abnormally higher in the Upper Peninsula. I should clarify that gas has always been a solid ten cents per gallon higher here than in downstate Michigan and in Wisconsin. I've always thought that was pretty reasonable, given our remote location.

But on THIS trip, we noticed that fuel prices fell 35 cents on our way down. The next day, we took pictures on the way back, and prices rose about 30 cents in less than 100 miles on the road.

First photo: Just before we entered the U.P from Northern Wisconsin

Second photo: Just crossed into the U.P.

Third photo: About 20 miles from home

Final photo: Home sweet home

I felt better, however, after doing a little research. Here I can see that some of you have it worse than we do!

Seems some are hesitant here to cross the $4 mark, as we've been hovering at $3.99 for a little while now. However, I was able to find a bargain on the way home from work this morning at $3.95. Still doesn't help the $55 tank of gas shock though!

What wonderful pictures! :)

Gas here is about $.20 higher, if you can imagine. Thankfully I traded in my car for something that no longer requires high octane!
